Punjab Plans Major Cut in Traffic Fines

News Desk3 days ago

In a significant policy shift, the Punjab government is planning a major reduction in traffic fines across multiple vehicle categories, aiming to ease the financial burden on citizens while maintaining road discipline.

According to official proposals, fines for motorcycles are expected to be reduced from Rs2,000 to Rs1,000, while penalties for rickshaws may drop from Rs3,000 to Rs1,000. However, stricter penalties for serious violations will remain in place to ensure enforcement is not compromised.

For cars and jeeps, the fine is likely to be lowered from Rs5,000 to Rs3,000, although major offences will still carry higher penalties. Similarly, fines for luxury vehicles above 2000cc are proposed to be cut from Rs20,000 to Rs10,000.

Public transport and heavy vehicles are also included in the proposed relief. Fines for vans, coasters, and similar vehicles may be reduced from Rs20,000 to Rs7,000, while penalties for trucks and buses are expected to be halved from Rs20,000 to Rs10,000.

Officials clarified that certain violations, such as overspeeding, will not see any reduction, indicating that the government intends to balance relief with road safety concerns.

The proposal, prepared by traffic authorities, will be presented for formal approval before implementation. Analysts say the move reflects the government’s attempt to respond to public criticism over previously increased fines, which many considered too harsh amid rising living costs.

Experts believe that while reduced fines may provide relief, effective enforcement and public awareness will remain key to improving traffic discipline.

The development highlights a shift in policy, where authorities are attempting to strike a balance between strict regulation and public affordability in Punjab’s evolving urban environment.
